How to Treat Motor Oil in Fabric

  1. How to Treat Motor Oil in Fabric

Removing motor oil stains from fabric can be intimidating and care must be taken when removing it from fabric, so as not to spread the oil further. The proper products and removal methods will successfully take out the motor oil stain, leaving your fabric looking as good as new.

    Instructions

    • 1
Blot up as much of the oil as possible from the fabric. Use paper towels to gently dab at the motor oil. Switch to a clean paper towel as one becomes filled up with oil. Avoid rubbing the oil or it may spread to unaffected parts of the fabric.
    • 2
Sprinkle the stained area with talcum powder or cornstarch. Allow it to sit on the fabric overnight to absorb the excess oil.
    • 3
Take the fabric outside and brush off the powder the next day. Use a rag to brush the powder from the fabric.
    • 4
Spray a generous amount of laundry pre-treat spray to both sides of the fabric. Use your fingers to work the solution into the stain. Allow the solution to sit on the fabric for at least one hour.
    • 5
Drizzle clear liquid laundry detergent directly onto the stain. Rub the detergent into the fabric with your fingers.
    • 6
Rinse the fabric in the sink under cold water. Again, use your fingers to try to work the stain out of the fabric.
    • 7
Launder the fabric as usual, using the hottest water that the fabric will allow. Inspect the fabric for any trace of the oil stain prior to putting it in the dryer. The heat from the dryer will set in the stain, making it more difficult to remove.
    • 8
Apply a dry cleaning solvent if the stain persists, or for oil stains that are not fresh. Place the fabric on a layer of paper towels with the oil-stained side down. Saturate a white rag with dry cleaning solvent. Blot the back of the stain with the dry cleaning solvent, which will transfer the oil onto the paper towels. Replace soiled paper towels with clean ones and repeat the process until the motor oil stain is gone. Rinse the fabric in cool water and launder as usual.
