Given the fact that US was way ahead in growth and economy and people had a good lifestyle, so this could be reflected in the preferences for their cars as well. As everything goes big in US, like big roads, big buildings, big cities, and so it had to be the same when it came to cars. Cars with big dimensions and big engines was what people mostly drove. The stalwarts of American automobile industry like GM, Ford, Dodge and others were all in for making bigger and more powerful cars, and back in India Maruti Suzuki took the initiative to actually make Indians drive, by developing the Maruti 800. Though there had been cars earlier as well but none could reach out to the common man like Maruti 800 could, so that is a kind of reference point from where it all started in the Indain automobile industry. And we can also say that it was this car that basically set in the Indain mentality of  a pocket-friendly car !

But so is not really the case with the Indians, as there are very few people who want to, or are able to break free of the usual city driving, which is why utility vehicles are yet to have that presence here in India.
Well this was more or less what the trend had been so far, but with  changing times and changing requirements, car needs had to change too.

Latest Technology in Cars

We have come a long way since the inception of automobile, and with all this passing time they have become much more than just a mere mode of transportation for us. More than just ferrying people from one place to another, there have a number of new dimensions added to cars and their development, as people eventually started traveling more and more.

We have come an age when cars were just a simple structure and mechanism, to hi-tech and swanky ones in the present time. With much more attention being paid to passenger comfort, safety, convenience and emission control, we now have cars with superior technology, unthinkable of even three decades back!

From features like auto dimming of the rear view mirrors and rear view mirrors automatically turning down as one shifts into reverse gear, to rain sensor vipers, from headlights automatically turning to certain angle on the side of the respective turn to assist better visibility, and wash sprays for the headlights, to display screens informing about fuel consumption and the range it can travel with the remaining fuel. From heated and ventilated seats and massaging seats to voice-activated GPS navigation system which helps plan out a convenient route to reach a destination.
But that’s still not all; in fact it’s just the starting of the list, which has a lot to follow. Here’s an insight to what all has been introduced or is about to be introduced in the cars: -

1. Navigation system: This feature has already been in use in certain parts of the world and is soon making its way into other parts. A navigation system comprises of a user screen fitted in the car’s dashboard and once the user has fed in the destination, this feature helps chalk out the route by giving out verbal directions, and hence it reduces the trouble of finding a place to quite an extent. This feature employs global positioning satellite and can also be connected to cellular phones and PDA’s.

Economy mode: Just like the way electrical appliances come with the option of power saving, similarly car manufacturers have also devised a way to make cars that can itself assess ways to switch off features like the air-conditioner, etc as and when its not required, thereby saving onto fuel which further means lesser emissions.

3. Curtain airbags: Though airbags have been in use since a while which have been providing safety basically from the front, the new edition is having curtain airbags which translates into airbags on the sides of the car, fitted in the headliner area, just above the car’s windows, ensuring safety from head injuries for the occupants of the vehicle in case of a mishap.

4. Black box technology: Just like the airplanes have black box fitted to record the events during flight, which are useful in finding details incase of a mishap, a similar technology is now coming to cars as well! With this technology, the details of the car like speed, location of the vehicle etc, at a certain given time can be recorded.

   This can be especially useful while claiming insurance in case of an accident or certain other legal matters.
5. Run-flat tires: This is more of a safety and convenience feature, which is already available in certain cars. With this feature the tire retains its original shape even in deflated condition, and it can go like that to quite a considerable distance. This can be quite useful especially while driving in emergency case, or at times when immediate assist is not present.

Self-parking feature: This is quite an advanced feature that is going to make its way to the cars, which in simple terms means a car that can park by itself, without the driver being seated inside the car! The user just needs to get off the car right before its about to be parked, and then just by the press of a button the car would move on its own and get parked. 7. Radars and cameras for safety: Yes the cars are going to be fitted with radars and cameras that would sense a potential hazard and accordingly warn the driver.

8. Wi-fi hook up’s: A new technology is being developed that would give information on weather, news and certain other important things with the help of wi-fi system to the car users.
9. Electrical power supply: A 40-volt electrical system would be provided in the vehicles, which would make it convenient to use various electrical devices.

10. Programmable vehicles: With electronic system assistance one can now program the car by choosing the mode in which one wishes to drive, for example one can choose between sporty or luxury drive, or one can also change the ground clearance as required.

RALLY RACING : All you need to know about it

If you even have a vague idea about rally racing, you might not ever get in the debate that Drivers aren’t Athletes. I am talking about what arguably is the toughest test of man and machine, put together. That’s hundreds of miles of the toughest, most testing and grueling tracks on the planet and facing them are a bunch of gifted, seasoned drivers alongside expert teams and their Rides, i.e. The biggest names in the automotive industry putting in thousands of dollars and, all their expertise and R&D’s to turn their regular production cars into resilient, rugged ultra-high performance machines trying to outperform the unforgiving route ahead. Winning a Rally may just be by pure speed / elapsed time between the stages, or by driving to a predetermined ideal journey time within the stages. Yes people grab on tight, because this is Rally Racing.
History and Development :
Such races can be dated back to 1894, when horseless cart races were first organized in Paris . Since the day the term “rally” was used in the first Monte Carlo Rally in 1911, the sport has come a long way since then . Its commercialization began immediately, it excited the leading car manufacturers and gained plenty of interest among the public.Now races began to get longer and tougher after that, city -to-city and even cross-country races were organized later on in the future. Of  Course the sport  experienced its share of slacks in its history, mainly due to the fatalities involved and during WW-I and WW-II. It was banned in almost all of Europe for a brief while initially, till 1907.

The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), the international motor-sport governing body, In 1973, organized the first World Rally Championship(WRC). The 42nd Auto Rally of Monte-Carlo became the first ever FIA World Rally Championship event. In 1987, the FIA sanctioned the first World Touring Car Championship.The WRC which is formed by different top notch international rally’s is the  sports premiere event, Driver’s world championship and Manufacturer’s championships are also some major events. Some races like the Dakar rally (1979–present ), which is the most grueling and testing off all, The East African Rally are also followed worldwide.
The game has evolved a great deal till now, as the traditional formats are changed and induction of new rules and regulations and certain alterations like Special Stage (A timed competitive section of road.) and Super Special Stage(A stage that is run in a specially built arena or on a specially constructed course)  were introduced .

The Cars :
A rally car is essentially a professionally modified production car , but the most competitive cars are limited-production prototypes. Almost every major car-maker has entered this format of racing ,Peugeot 206, 307, Citroën Xsara, Subaru imprezza and Skoda Fabia are  some of the successful rally cars at present.These are built within the technical regulations set by the F.I.A. Races are grouped under various categories under WRC viz. Group A, Group B(discontinued), SUPER 1600 and 2000 are the main ones. WRC cars are built under the following specifications :

• Engine displacement of maximum 2 L
• Turbo or ALS ( anti-lag system ), To limit power, all forced induction (turbocharged) cars are fitted with a 34 mm diameter air-restrictor before the turbocharger inlet, limiting the air flow. This air flow limits power output of the engine to 300 hp officially.
• Four wheel drive , Suspension settings are changed and tyres are used accordingly to the track type
• Weight reduction to a minimum weight of 1230 kg, Aerodynamic parts
• Chassis strengthening for greater rigidity and safety enhancement.

Drivers and Co-drivers :
Rally drivers are considered to be the best drivers in the world .They master driving all sorts of tracks under all kinds of weather and possess the stamina to withstand the grueling hundreds of miles of the race track lasting several days. The rally driver’s thrill comes in overcoming the environmental obstacle as much as it comes from beating the opposition in wheel-to-wheel competition. That means the rally driver’s toughest opponent is sitting in the driver’s seat. Racing the elements or the clock is essentially an internal competition in which the driver is always trying to go faster and seldom goes fast enough.

• Co- Drivers : The key to rally drivers’ success are their co-drivers. Rally drivers cannot practice the course and must rely on their navigators (or co-driver) to survive. They prepares the notes containing the detailed information of the track’s turns and roads. Rally drivers determine what speed and angle to enter each turn or crest in the road by listening to their co-drivers’ constant instructions.

Rally racing is a premiere form of motor -racing, but it is different from the traditional circuit race. It is a point-to-point format of racing rather than a circuit. The race can last several days and cover hundreds of miles through rain, snow, gravel or forests, day or night! In this format of racing, the tracks are temporarily closed public roads usually unpaved; they might be high mountain passes, long desert passes, valleys or forest roads. The drivers and the co-drivers drive between set locations (stages) on a specified track leaving from one or more start points on their cars .
Some terminologies associated with a rally race track:
1. Cutting:   Sometimes rally drivers clip the inside of turns in the road to reduce total distance traveled and maintain higher speed through corners. At times, it can be unsafe to cut corners.

2. Hairpin:  A hairpin is a slow, 180 degree turn.

3. Leg: A leg refers to each part of the rally, separated by a fixed minimum stopping time. Typically each day of a rally is a different leg.

4. Notes/Pace notes: Notes are descriptions of the roads used in the rally. The co-driver calls the notes to the driver so the driver knows what to expect. In man Rallies across the world, the driver and co-driver get to pre-run the rally roads at slow speeds in a street car in order to create their own notes.

5.Oversteer: Oversteering occurs when the car turns more than the driver expects.

6.Parc Expose : An area where all competing cars are parked together and put on display for fans to  enjoy up close.

7.Parc Ferme: An area where all competing rally cars must be parked and left alone. Typically used overnight or upon completion of the rally.
8.Regrouping : Regrouping refers to a scheduled stop, during which time cars remaining in the rally are regrouped. No service is allowed during a regroup.
9. Recce (short for Reconnaissance): When a driver and co-driver pre-run the competitive route at legal public speeds in a non-competition car, the term “recce” is used. The driver and co-driver use the recce to create their stage notes.
10. Road Section :  A section of public road where rally cars must travel at legal speeds and obey all traffic laws. Road sections typically link the timed competitive sections and are also links to and from service areas. They are also known as”transits.”

11. Tarmac: This term is used in rallying to refer to paved roads in asphalt.
12.  Understeer : This is a condition exhibited when a car’s front wheels have little or no grip and are unable to steer the vehicle. A car that understeers will not turn in as well or at all. On gravel roads understeer may be more pronounced due to the lack of grip available.

Custom Automobile Modifications – Tuning

Getting your Car to swirl like it has never done before is nothing less than a dream come true. Therefore, you decide to attempt an engine – tuning project, or simply –  modifications. Now, this would require  a good plan-of-action –  once you’ve done your homework and researched about what you want your car to do. You could either hire professionals to do it, which would burn a crater in your pocket (I like to believe that these people using unicorn-blood and  Adamantium instead of your regular motor oil and regular metal –  which is the only possible explanation). So, if you have a pocket big enough – voila! Nothing there is that you have to worry about after you know what you need. Otherwise, I ‘d suggest you put on your utilikilt (or not!)  and get right to it. You’d need good research,a  good plan (and to stick to it), and someone who has done it before to help you.

• Turbochargers
  Or turbo kits are basically gas compressors which force air at a greater pressure into the car’s engine. Initially designed for airplanes, these give a significant boost in the horse  power without any significant increase in its weight. Working on a forced induction system,basically a turbine inside the turbo increases the airflow to the engine. Spinning at up to 150,000 rpm, the turbine causes air to flow about 30 times faster than most car engines can go. More air means more oxygen for the explosions going on inside  your car’s engine, which means more power. Superchargers also work on the same basis.

  A very basic method to increase the acceleration is to replace the factory Air Filter with a high-flow Air Filter. This benefits just about any type of car and is a relatively cheaper car modification option. Increased throttle response, extra Horsepower plus some smoothness is added to the performance.
• Better Fuel Injection
  Adding a performance fuel injection adds to the power of your engine, which means better acceleration, and also increases the fuel-economy. It gives better distribution of fuel inside the engine, from cylinder to cylinder, smoother engine response to throttle transitions, and more reliability.

• Camshafts
  Located at the top of the engine. It is a long shaft with a series of lobes along it and it rotates relative to engine speed. The lobes push close the valves in the head and allow the engines cylinders to suck in air/fuel and expel exhaust gases. Most modern engines have a double overhead cam and configuration with one controlling the intake side of the engine and another controlling the exhaust side.

• Fuel Pumps
  A Fuel Pump is an essential component on a car or any other internal combustion engined device. Fuel has to be pumped from the fuel tank to the engine and delivered under low pressure to the carburetor or under high pressure to the fuel injection system. Some fuel injected engines have two fuel pumps for this purpose: one low pressure/high volume supply pump in the tank and one high pressure/low volume pump on or near the engine.

• Nitrous Oxide is an oxidizer and not a fuel. It breaks down to increase the saturation level of Oxygen in air from its normal level (from 21% to 33%). Nitrous systems can increase power by as little as 0.5 hp (0.37 kW) or as much as 3,000 hp (2,200 kW), depending on the engine type and nitrous system type. Dry nitrous systems induce the gas through a fuel injection process, while the Wet Nitrous System induces it with the fuel using more sophisticated systems.

• ECU
  Engine Control Unit is basically a computer chip installed in a car that reads information through various sensors, and uses it to control the ignition systems – like fuel pressure and timing, ignition timing, throttle timing, boost controls- allowing the car’s performance to be controlled in great detail. This is primarily the edge that cars from our generations have over cars some decades back. It also accounts for ambient conditions, and more variables from second to second than traditional systems. Chip Tuning, would mean upgrading the car’s ECU for better performance. Reprogramming, adding an external device to it are the general ways of doing it. We’d suggest you take help of a specialist here, “backfire” and other accidents may quite as well occur.

10 Custom Automobile Modifications – Design

Every automobile owner looks for something in his ride that he connects to, that defines him and is certainly willing to go the extra mile to induce a hint or a lot of uniqueness into it, we all know. Surely everyone likes a “pimped-out” car. If you’re not totally “excited” about the color of the car you own or are buying, a custom paint job will set everything right. A nice slick design or color will do. Stripes or ‘Racing Stripes’ can anytime set the pulse racing and turn any regular car into some racing-DNA machine. The options and the variety available for both, the paint job and the Stripes are extensive. A good mono-colored job to very detailed illustrations, and a variety of custom stripes like the “factory racing style” or “ fender accent stripes” are available. Make sure that you are positive about the design you want; your car should represent you. But don’t paint your favorite porn-star’s picture and/or yourself naked on it, that would be going overboard.

4.Designer Interiors
Revamping the car’s interiors is a great way to make it simply jaw-dropping.  Monotone or dual-tone designer interior graphics can really do the trick. Deciding to put a hole (well, something similar) can be a tough decision but we think it’s worth a thought. And you must take extreme caution when doing it or letting someone do it. The Push-Button ignition is simple and cool, and it doesn’t cost much to install it. One can install a “Push-Button” to his car fairly easily- there are hundreds of how-tos over the internet; or just simply pay someone to do it for you. You will be able to find a large range of such “buttons” without much effort. It can also be an entirely automatic thing wherein the button will sense the key’s presence inside the car and you wouldn’t even have to go through the trouble of inserting the Key to the car in the keyhole. Life couldn’t be simpler! Further, this may deter thefts too, as it is very hard to duplicate the Key’s code (of the chip inside it) than the Key itself.

Apart from the aforementioned customizations, it doesn’t just end there; or anywhere for that matter. It is your car and your imagination. If you can, or you can get someone to modify your car or whatever part of it, very well. It could be simple changes like tinted glasses, custom exhausts, single wipers  converting the roof of your car into a convertible roof  or just installing Roof Visors-the range is unlimited.
